Would you like to source 80% of your electrical energy from renewable sources

Since the beginning of this year, Athena Electrical has been getting involved in energy storage and we thought you’d like to hear about a recent project in Stoke Newington.

Case Study

The solar panels Jessica Kingsley’s parents installed on their home 30 years ago are still pumping out the power, so when some roof repair work was needed on her own house in Stoke Newington, it seemed the ideal time to install a solar pv generating system.

A relatively high-energy user and out at work all day, Jessica decided to take the plunge and become an early adopter of a storage system for her home generated energy.

To ensure we designed a system to meet her requirements, we carefully reviewed her current energy use, budget and the available space in her home for the battery products.

A combination of energy storage products were selected to maximize storage of the excess electricity generated during the day:

Solic 200 hot water diverter to heat 3kWh of  water

LG Chem 6.4kWh Lithium-ion battery.

3000VA Victron battery inverter and management system was chosen to manage the loads as well as provide minute-by-minute energy monitoring.

Luise and Miho up on the roof installing Schletter cross-rail mounting system, SolarEdge power optimisers and Panasonic 245W solar panels

The SolarEdge monitoring portal allows Jessica to see exactly how her solar panels are performing while the VRM portal provides real-time and historic data so that she can review her energy consumption, solar generation and battery state of charge.

On a not very sunny 28th June 2016, Jessica generated 16.6kWh of solar energy.  She was able to use 9.4kWh of the solar power directly which included 3kWh heating used to heat water and sent 5.1kWh to her battery for later use, importing just 100W from the National Grid and still contributing 2.1kWh of renewable energy to the National Grid.

Jessica is amazed at the reduction in grid energy she has needed over recent weeks – despite the most terrible June weather she has reduced her imported energy by 93% !

She regularly checks the monitoring portal and feels that her growing understanding energy use patterns has led to modifications in her behaviour  reducing her energy consumption further.

With less than 18,000 domestic PV systems in London and more than 3.4 million homes, London desperately needs Homeowners like Jessica to take up the challenge to help London meet more of its energy needs from Solar, decentralize energy and reduce carbon emissions.
